RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel on duty over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
