The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on target, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.
