Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress Following Wave of Harassment Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the mission, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of outer space.
