Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, one notices a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title was excluded that year
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
