The New Mayor Vows a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in First Address
During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his tenure.
An Unprecedented Mayor
The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A opportunity of this kind is rare and rarer still is it that the public whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.
Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”
Adhering to Democratic Socialist Principles
Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.
The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.
An Ambitious Platform
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:
- Universal childcare
- Free buses
- A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
- A pilot of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing External Challenges
The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.
Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.
The Basic Tests of Governing
Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable transit service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.
As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
